Passion for Pipes (and drums, and fiddles...)

On this part of our webpage, we're going to share newsworthy information from students and instructors from the Celtic Arts Winter School programs.  If you've got some good news relative to your piping, drumming or fiddling exploits - please let us know and we'll post the info here!

Richard Gillies from Portland, OR, and Anthony Masterson of Houston, TX, continued their memorable 2009 amateur competitive season successes with top placings at the George Sherriff Memorial Piping Championship in Hamilton, Ontario, on November 21st.  Gillies won the Championship with his 1st place performance of MacLeod's Salute in the Piobaireachd;   3rd place showing in the MSR with The Young MacGregor, Arniston Castle and Alick C. MacGregor; and winning the 6/8 competition.  Masterson won the MSR with his performance of Willie MacLean, the Doune of Invernochty and the Blackberry Bush, and also placing second in the 6/8 march.  Congrats to both of these long time Winter School attendees!

The results from the 2009 competitive piping and drumming season overseas are filled with the names of Winter School current and past instructors.  In what will clearly be remembered as one of the great competitive years ever had by any individual, Stuart Liddell demonstrated his remarkable ability and musical talent by appearing in all of piping's best known events.

London is the venue for the prestigous "Bratach Gorm" Piobaireachd competition, presented by the Scottish Piping Society of London.  As if winning that wasn't enough, Stuart Liddell acomplished the rare feat of winning the Gillies Cup Open Piobaireachd as well.  Bruce Gandy from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia placed 2nd in both Piobaireachd events as well.  Willie McCallum placed 4th in the Bratach Gorm, and Roddy MacLeod placed 5th.

On October 31, 2009 in Blair Atholl, Scotland, Stuart Liddell won his first Glenfiddich Championship.  The overall rankings ended up with Willie McCallum receiving 2nd, Roddy MacLeod 3rd, and Bruce Gandy placing 4th.

The Northern Meeting, Inverness, Scotland, September 4, 2009 - Stuart Liddell wins the Clasp competition (Piobaireachd), 2nd prize went to Roddy MacLeod, 3rd to Jack Lee, and 4th to Murray Henderson.  In more of the "who's who" of current and former Winter School instructors, the Grade A Hornpipe & Jig prize was won by Stuart Liddell, with 2nd again to Roddy, 3rd to Willie McCallum, and 4th to Alasdair Gillies.

Inverness, Scotland, September 3, 2009 - Willie McCallum, of  Bearsden, Scotland, won the RSPS SIlver Star Former Winners MSR competition, with Stuart Liddell of Inveraray, Scotland coming in third.

Argyllshire Gathering, August 26, 2009 - The RSPS Silver Star Former Winners MSR saw Stuart Liddell place 2nd behind James Murray.  Jack Lee, of Surrey, BC placed 3rd in the Senior Piobaireachd event.

Anthony Masterson - has been to Winter School several times over the past few years, and we're pleased to see the result from the 27th annual Nicol-Brown Amateur Invitational, which Anthony won on October 10th of this year!  Winning this prestigeous title, also came with some wonderful prizes, including airfare to compete in London in November of 2010, and a new custom made kilt.  Congratulations too to Richard Gillies, another long-time Winter School student, who won the Donald MacLeod Memorial 6/8 March competition held as part of the Nicol-Brown.  To see picutres, and read full results from this competition, please visit the Nichol-Brown website.

Congratulations to long-time Winter School  participant and current Celtic Arts Foundation Board Member, Tyrone Heade for his success at the CLASP world solo amateur piping championships held in Glasgow this summer.  Tyrone won the Grade 1 Piobaireachd competition, as reported here.  In addition to making time and serving on our Board, Tyrone stays really busy leading the Seattle-based Elliott Bay Pipe Band, teaching and performing around the region.  He also wrote a new 2/4 march for his fellow CAF Board Member, Dr. Jim Monroe, that was presented at this year's Skagit Valley Highland Games.

Our good friend, and Celtic Arts Foundation member, Dr. David MacDonald of Vallejo, California recently had a very touching article he wrote published in the online publication "Piping World."  And who is that gracing the cover, but none other than PM Roddy MacLeod, MBE!  Piping World is a free e-mail delivered publication - we appreciate Bruce Campbells permission allowing us to share David's article here.
