Weave a Wee Plaid: Weaving a Mug Rug on a Frame Loom

Description

Learn the basics of handweaving while making a small plaid mug rug on a notched frame loom. You will begin by learning how to warp your loom, then learn about three basic weaving structures that can be used for your project: tabby/plain weave, basketweave, and twill. Along the way, you will learn how to read a simple weaving draft, the basic vocabulary used by weavers, and practice the techniques needed to weave your mug rug.

As you weave, Echo will also share some of the history of weaving in Scotland, including the development of plaid and tartan, and the role woven cloth has played in Scottish culture. She will show you how simple combinations of warp and weft create beautiful plaid patterns and share a bit about how woven plaid developed into some of the textiles now most closely associated with Scotland. You will leave with a well-on-its-way, or finished, wool mug rug and the skills needed to warp a small frame loom and continue experimenting with weaving at home.

Who Is This Workshop For?‍

Complete beginners, fiber artists curious about weaving, history enthusiasts, and anyone interested in Scottish textile traditions. No previous weaving experience is required.

Students Will Learn

• Basic loom and weaving vocabulary
• How to warp a notched frame loom
• How to weave a header at the beginning of a project and a footer at the end
• How to read a basic weaving draft
• About three weaving structures: tabby/plain weave, basketweave, and twill
• How to weave your mug rug
• How to remove and finish your mug rug

Materials

‍You may bring your own supplies or purchase a kit from the instructor for $40. The instructor-supplied kit includes:

• A notched frame loom and shed stick
• A cardboard spacer
• A weaving needle
• Enough worsted-weight wool yarn to complete one mug rug

If you would like to use particular colors in your plaid, you are welcome to bring additional yarn. Please bring worsted-weight, 100% wool, non-superwash yarn.

If you are bringing your own loom, you should bring a notched frame loom with a weaving area of at least 7 x 7 inches. A weaving needle, a cardboard spacer, and suitable worsted-weight wool yarn will also be needed.

Instructor Bio

Echo Mae [she/hers] is one of the owners of Northwest Yarns & Mercantile in Bellingham, WA and a dedicated fan of fiber arts history and culture. When not encouraging anyone and everyone to learn a fiber art, dreaming up knitting patterns, or writing for her shop blog, Know Your Fiber, Echo can be found exploring fiber arts trends, culture, and history to share with her fiber arts community and with almost any person who will stand still long enough to listen to her talk about them.
